The seeds of the development of science and technology, the transfer of cultural heritage, the development of self-confidence sprout in the quiet library environment, breathing the smell of books. Today, the use of the library has decreased considerably due to the widespread perception of internet use as library research, the increase in the production of virtual books, and the Covid 19 pandemic process. The main purpose of the “Open Air Library” design is to interpret the use of the library, which will increase the reading and research habits, according to today’s lifestyle and make it a part of life again. Based on this purpose, the theme of “library in my garden” was created. Based on this theme, an open-air space is designed that can be used in the common gardens of the complex in city settlements and in common public spaces in town settlements. This design will be presented as a space consisting of urban furniture. In our ongoing project, we considered the natural processes that change our habits, such as the need for social distance and the need for people to stay away from socializing, which are the natural returns of the pandemic process. The subject we discussed, in this process where our habits have changed, this space design process, where we can breathe in our close living environment without getting too far from our home, where social distance rules can be followed, that offers comfortable usage areas like using the internet on our tablet from our comfortable chair in our home and has physical communication with the book, provided us with sub-purposes as we progressed. Thanks to the location and function of the design, prominent sub-purposes such as increasing close neighborhood relations, ensuring interpersonal sharing, combining technology and traditional understanding supported our design.

In the first stage of the design process we intended, we were in contact with the interior architecture and urban design departments of universities. We aim to continue this ongoing communication process with the “furniture design for outdoor activity” workshop. As the process progresses, a cooperation will be carried out with the metropolitan municipalities for the use of our design in public spaces. As a result of these cooperations, we aim to add additional functions to our design and to design urban furniture for these functions.

The materials we intend to use in our design will be selected from easily-cleaned natural materials by conducting joint workshops with manufacturers. By changing the phenomenon that comes to mind when the library is mentioned, it will be ensured that people meet with books in a natural environment, in an open area. The main purpose of the “Open Air Library” design is to interpret the use of the library, which will increase people’s reading and research habits, according to today’s lifestyle and make it a part of life again.

As the process progresses, a cooperation will be carried out with the metropolitan municipalities for the use of our design in public spaces. In addition, a design registration application was made within the scope of this project.
